Plan the Perfect Outdoor Fireplace

Planning to install an outdoor fireplace is very much like planning to install an indoor fireplace. However, there are some differences that you may wish to take note of. For example, all outdoor fireplaces are exposed to the external environment. So that may affect your choice of raw materials. Also, since it’s an outdoor fireplace, you can worry less about smoke.

Like all fireplaces, you only have to ponder over three things: building materials, ventilation, and size.

When it comes to building materials, there are many options to choose from. You can build fireplaces with cast iron, masonry, granite, limestone, copper, and other building materials. Each type of material will have its own unique characteristics. For instance, iron has the tendency to rust over time, but it can withstand extremely high temperatures and can be very durable.

Ventilation is also a major component that you should ponder over. Most outdoor fireplaces are installed with chimneys. When you have a tall chimney installed, you don’t have to worry about smoke. Smoke will be directed upwards, and into the atmosphere. Of course, you should choose a chimney design that fits well with the exterior of your home.

Then you have the element of heat to consider. The size of your outdoor fireplace depends on the area that you want to heat up. The larger the area, the bigger the fireplace. Bear in mind that when you have a large fireplace, more burning fuel will be consumed. But in exchange, you get more heat throughout a larger area. To help spread heat around, you can also install a fireplace blower. That will help even out the heat in the same area.

In general, the more time you are going to stay outdoors, the more you may be willing to invest in your outdoor fireplace. It doesn’t make sense to install a huge permanent fireplace if no one is going to use it often. So think over this carefully. Will a small fireplace be good enough?

To perfect your plan, start thinking about installation issues as early as possible. Do you want to install an outdoor fireplace yourself, or do you need help installing the fireplace? In the current market place, there are DIY outdoor fireplaces available. However, if you do not have any experience whatsoever, it’s always better to enlist some help.

If there is a custom design that you like very much, then your only option is to hire professional contractors to install the fireplace for you. In a way, your outdoor fireplace plan has become a mini project.

Then there is the option of buying portable outdoor fireplaces. This is a popular option for those who are looking to heat up an area temporarily. It will also help save space as you can put it away when not in use.

Outdoor Fireplaces Project in Houston Texas

A couple named Rick and Susan Ashcroft contacted Exterior Worlds back in the spring of 2000. They told us that they had always wanted a fireplace, but knew the winters in Houston were too mild to justify having one installed indoors. They asked us if we could build them an outdoor fireplace and a patio adjacent to their living room. The intent was to create a virtual extension of the living room centered on a warm element that would make chilly nights in the early spring, late autumn, and winter both comfortable and pleasant for gatherings and conversation.

We agreed with this plan wholeheartedly. Outdoor fireplaces like this are much more useful in temperate, humid climates. The warmth of a fire adds relief from both cold and humidity, and the structure of a fireplace is an ideal architectural compliment to the styles of many home builds. To create this type of centerpiece, however, we would have to build a special patio that would be reminiscent of interior architecture and also complimentary to outdoor landscaping. The best way to accomplish this was to place symmetrically square interlocking pavers in a pattern that mimicked that of indoor tile. This helped accentuate the feeling of a virtual living room, and it better blended with the stonework and vegetation in the surrounding landscape.

We built the outdoor fireplace completely out of natural stone, fitting each one together like pieces in a puzzle. The chimney was approximately 2 ½ times higher than the fireplace interior, and added a stately touch to the backdrop of the landscape. Two flanking columns, both slightly higher than the fireplace interior, were constructed on either side. This added an Old World sensibility to the structure that naturally drew the eye toward the logs that burned in its interior on cold nights. There was one more element, however, that we needed to add in order to make this elegant feature a truly year-round keynote and that was the element of concealed lighting. On nights too warm to light a fire, it was still possible to enjoy the illusion of fire by using these special luminaires to light the interior, the stones in the chimney, and the two flanking columns. This created a sublime interplay of firelight and stone that rose majestically into the night and provided the ideal gathering point for a summer dinner party or family gathering.

At the end of the patio opposite the outdoor fireplace, there was a drop-off of about 4 feet. Here, we built a stone staircase that connected the patio to a walkway that ran around the corner of the home to the natural swimming pool. Next to the steps, we built a stone wall that connected on both ends to the patio, giving us ample room for a planter populated with a number of indigenous plant species. We completed the project by planting an oak tree within this enclosure in order to give the patio future shade, and also to provide a place to mount an outdoor chandelier to fully magnify the sense of indoor living turned inside out.

How to Design the Perfect Outdoor Fireplace

During warmer months, the outdoors is a favorite seating area for many families. However, even the warmest summer days can give way to cool nights. This switch often makes late night patio get togethers at best uncomfortable and, at worst, unfeasible. You can transform your outdoor living area to an area that is usable and enjoyable for most of the year by installing an outdoor fireplace.

The first, and most important, step in the design process is contacting your local zoning office. Requirements for outdoor fireplaces vary widely from community to community. Some communities do not allow wood burning fireplaces at all, while others have special requirements on size, placement and safety features. You cannot go forward with the design process until you understand these building codes.

Once you have received information on local requirements, you can begin looking for ideas for fireplaces designs. You can find these online, through home improvement websites, or by looking through home design magazines. Your local home improvement store or home design company may also have plenty of inspiration for outdoor fireplace designs.

With the designs you like in hand, decide exactly where you want to build the fireplace. The size and location of the fireplace will help you decide, if allowed, to use a wood burning or gas only model. Take measurements of the area, keeping in mind the clearance you have above, as well as the clearance you will need on each side to maintain local regulations.

Now that you have a more exact idea of what you want, you can begin the specific design process. Either on your own, or with the help of a designer, draw up plans that will perfectly match your outdoor space. Consider what specific materials you will need, as well as how large your budget for the project is.

Take these plans to a contractor or architect who can assist you in drawing up a specific blueprint. Since an outdoor fireplace is a very large structure, you should have a professional inspect your design to ensure that it is structurally sound. Your contractor will also be able to give you a more exact estimate on the costs associated with materials, as well as the labor costs and a timeline for construction.

To ensure that your structure is up to code, you should make an appointment with your community’s building inspector. They will be able to tell you if your outdoor fireplace will meet all the necessary regulations and assist you in obtaining any permits you need.

Throughout the process, keep in mind the current decoration of your outdoor living area, as well as the ideal ambience you’d like created by the new fireplace. There are many resources available now to help inspire your outdoor fireplace design. While this is a large project, it should ultimately reflect the personality and importance of your patio.

Enjoy the Outdoors – With Patio Heaters Or Propane Heaters

The love of the outdoor does not only stop at your own backyard. You can also bring the warmth of patio heaters to the office. The staff will love this new warm and cozy environment outside and it can even give them some sort of moral boost. The heaters have also attracting people at outdoor dining spots.

Then again, there are bound to be smokers around. Since they cannot very well smoke indoors, the outdoors need to be at least equipped with patio heaters.

Compared to matches, one should use electric starters as matches can be quite dangerous.

You can expect a coverage of between 10 and 20 feet in radius and between 10 and 30 degrees Fahrenheit raise in temperature.

You can find heaters that are mounted high on the wall in order to facilitate the downwards blowing of the heat. You can also find heaters that are attached to the ceiling. As well, free standing ones.

It is a good idea to get heaters that switch off automatically upon reaching the desired temperature. Wood heaters are quite commonly used or, you can choose to have a copper fire pit or stainless steel heater. Not to worry, the flame is always kept within by a protective grate. Better yet, you can use your own firewood, making these affordable. Just be aware of your local laws regarding wood combustion.

Cover the your outdoor heaters for protection.

The patio heaters are not suitable for winters, but fall and spring. They radiate heat which heats up the area not the air. This is cheaper unlike convection which do use up a lot of energy to heat up the air and thus less effect on the area.

Patio heaters can cost anywhere between 0 and 0. You will want to watch out for safety features like emergency cut off valves, flame controllers, sealed burners, tilt switches, etc. New heaters will have these features incorporated, but the old ones may not.

The patio heaters that are in antique bronze or stainless steel will look very stylish indeed.

The propane gas heaters are actually contained heat that runs on propane gas tanks. They also come in a unique design. Without a doubt, these heaters which look like antique lamp posts will definitely look superb in your garden.

There are a lot of style to choose from for propane heaters. Choosing should depend on the area you want to heat and how you will use it.

The amount of heat a propane heater will release depends on the BTU that is the British Thermal Unit. The highest BTU unit is between 40,000 and 46,000. Thus, the heaters can heat the area of up to 175 square foot.

The BTU is the quantity of heat vital to increase temperature of 1 pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit. Higher BTU would mean warmer temperature; however, this also depends on the design of the heater to heat certain amount of space.

How much heat you can feel also depends some on the surroundings. When walls and gates can shield the area from the wind and trap heat within, the heating capacity can be optimum.

The propane heaters will need 18 inches clearance on the ceilings.

Propane heaters can also be in a movable version. They come with wheels and therefore useful especially on bad weather days. Therefore, with this type of heater, you can choose between movable or permanent ones. Table top propane heaters are also affordable however, getting the heaters depend on how you intend to use it.

The propane heaters use the same fuel as the ones used for barbecues. They will not require installation by specialists. You will only need them if you are installing heaters that use electricity or gas line.

Although the summer season is coming, many people are looking towards their fireplace as a great place to spend time with friends and family in the warm months – not an indoor fireplace, but a semi-portable design often located on a back deck or in the backyard. These outdoor fireplaces provide ambience to any outdoor evening gathering, less expensively than many people think.

The most common kind of outdoor fireplace is known as a chiminea, consisting of a concave base, a single opening through which to feed the fire, and a short chimney or smoke stack. These small outdoor fireplaces are often made of cast iron, aluminum, ceramic or terra cotta, and although they are intended mostly for small fires, there are larger and more durable units (generally cast iron) which are intended for a controlled but roaring bonfire in the safety of your own back yard.

Chimineas and other outdoor fireplaces are designed for use in the summer with the intention of winter storage, since the clay or terra cotta based units can actually crack in extremely cold winter temperatures. Cast iron chimineas or outdoor fireplaces are not at risk for cracking, but snow and other precipitation will quickly cause them to rust. These outdoor fireplaces tend to range in price from 0 all the way up to well over 0 depending on the material, size, and the extra safety or comfort features that you happen to choose.

Some have safety grills and pitched chimney stacks to keep hot embers or ash from floating away and creating a fire hazard, while others are no more than a firebox with an open stack. Regardless of the type of chiminea or outdoor fireplace, only firewood should be burned in it. Other substances may give off toxic chemicals that can ruin the atmosphere of your gathering both literally and figuratively, and some fuels may leave hard to clean deposits on the inside of the fireplace.

Outdoor fireplaces are an increasingly popular way for people to gather together, experiencing the outdoors without traveling too far from home – in the evening when the air grows cooler and some brave souls venture past the air conditioning. If you think back towards childhood memories of open campfires, an outdoor woodstove might just be the thing to try.

Outdoor Fireplaces and Plans on Building One

When the weather is cold, there is always the need for heat in the outdoors. That is because you want to be able to carry certain activities outside the home even when it’s really cold outside. That way, you won’t be confined to your house. There are many occasions that you may find yourself needing some heat.

Sports activities.

Sports events continue to take place even when the weather is cold. Human beings need to exercise. So when it’s winter, some people like to get out of the house to ski, to skate, etc. Usually, exercise is enough to keep the body warm. However, when the exercise stops, that is when heat is needed to keep the body warm.

Camping and hiking.

The winter landscape is very different from landscapes in other seasons. Some people like to go for camping or hiking trips to enjoy the beautiful scenery. It’s when the campers or hikers stop to take a rest (or to sleep) that heat is needed.

Activities just outside the house.

Sometimes, you just find that it’s a good idea to get outside the house for a breath of fresh air, especially when you have been indoors for prolonged periods of time. For example, you may want to play some games outside the house or read a book. However, it is almost impossible to stay out for a decent amount of time when there is no proper heating.

The solution to all the above situations is outdoor fireplaces. There are many different types of outdoor fireplaces. Some are portable, some integrated, and others attached for life. They are also powered by different energy sources. Some are powered by wood, some by gas, and others by electricity. The type of outdoor fireplace you choose depend on the type of activity that you are involved in while you are outdoors.

For instance, if you are in the habit of spending long periods of time outdoors in the cold doing some carpentry work, then perhaps it’s a good idea to install a full-fledge outdoors fireplace. Such a fireplace can be constructed from any fire resistant materials such as cast iron or masonry. These are highly durable materials that will usually last for a lifetime. Of course, they are also rather expensive to install.

If budget is a concern, you can also consider installing pre-engineered fireplaces. Such fireplaces are actually DIY fireplaces. In other words, you can buy the materials in a kit, and install the fireplace yourself. After that, you can decorate the fireplace yourself by covering it with bricks or other materials.

Finally, there are portable outdoor fireplaces. These can be moved around easily. Some can be attached or detached from fixtures. The benefit of having a portable outdoor fireplace is that you can always transport it another location, or you can store it away when it’s no longer needed.

Your plans for building an outdoor fireplace ultimately depends on your budget and your primary activity.

Constructed in July-August, 2008, it includes about 175 cinder blocks, 50 solid blocks, a few hundred 80 year old bricks (which came from my house foundation when it was rebuilt a few months prior) for the stack, Sandstone for the flat surface/shelf areas, river rock for the front verticle faces, black marble for the fireplace floor, and approx. 650 patio bricks with 8 bags of sand. The Patio edge is roughly 13 1/2 feet long each side which calculates to about 185 sq ft.. EDIT (May 2009): Just had to rebuild the underside of the fire box. The black marble floor that was exposed and had no support underneath, became brittle, cracked, and broke away over the last 9 months and had to be rebuilt with a solid block base under the new fire box floor. Not too difficult to fix, but was still an unexpected expense.

Safety Tips in Using Propane Heaters in Camping

As with any other equipment that generate heat, camping heaters must be used with care and caution. One kind of camping heater – Propane heaters can be a very safe device if used properly, and can be one of your best friends during your camping trip given the level of comfort it provides.

Upon buying this type of camping heater, first and foremost, check if the heater has been tested and given a seal of approval by a recognized organization/agency. This ensures that the equipment is following the standards for safe propane-reliant products. Make sure to read carefully the instruction manual and safety precautions that comes along with your heater, and use it accordingly.

It is also wise to check your heater before you bring it to the campsite or before use. A good inspection tip is to detect leaks by smell, as propane gas gives off an odor akin to the smell of rotten eggs. Likewise, you can apply soapy water around the connections – a bubbling around the space will indicate a leak.

It is very important that adequate space is left around this camping heater when being used inside the tent. Ideally, the space on the sides should be between 6 and 12 inches, the space above it somewhere between 1 and 4 feet, and the space in front should be at least three feet.

Likewise, adequate ventilation is a must when using propane heaters. Make sure that fresh air still has a way of getting inside your tent. The reason for this is that however safe such camping heaters have become, combustion by propane still produces trace amounts of carbon monoxide (a byproduct). Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning by ensuring proper ventilation in your tent when using your heater. Another important thing to remember is to never, under any circumstances leave the heater unattended or overnight while you sleep. Many propane-based heaters are now equipped with oxygen depletion sensors (ODS) which detects when oxygen levels in a space are beginning to decline, and such heaters are the best ones to use.

If you begin experiencing any signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, the heater must be switched off as soon as possible and people inside the tent must be evacuated to an open space. Signs of carbon monoxide poisoning include (but are not limited to) nausea, dizziness, and confusion.

You should only use the propane heater for the purpose that it is intended for which is to provide warmth inside your tent. This should not be used to cook food (or toast bread!), as reading light or to dry wet clothes. When using camping heaters, it is best to err on the side of caution. Also, keep anything that might burn away from it. Keep a good distance between the heater and your clothes, sleeping bag, paper, plastic materials etc. Campers should also make it a practice to elevate the heater using anything stable such as your cooler to lessen the chance of it being toppled over by being kicked.

By putting safety first, you will be able to enjoy your camping more through the peace of mind it brings.

Houston Outdoor Fireplace, Custom Fireplaces

Outdoor fireplaces are hot. A 2005 survey taken by the Hearth, Patio & Barbeque Association revealed that Americans spent nearly 0 billion on home remodeling of which one-third of that amount went towards adding outdoor living areas to their landscape design. Further, 67 percent of those surveyed who intended to build outdoor living areas also planned to install outdoor fireplaces or fire pits. The American Society of Landscape Architects confirms this trend: Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces top its list of biggest trends in landscape design for 2007.

Outdoor Fireplaces: Design Considerations

If you’re dreaming of what an outdoor fireplace or fire pit would look like in your back yard, consider the following design issues:

• Break up your landscape design into “rooms” or “zones.” Just as in a house, the “living room” is the central gathering spot and therefore perfect for outdoor fireplaces. In fact, the outdoor fire element serves as an “anchor” for an outdoor living room.

• Consider the views from the house. Where are your focal points? Are there privacy issues?

• At the same time, consider the view from the yard-do you want to take advantage of a view to a bayou, water way or greenbelt?

• Keep in mind that large structures, like outdoor fireplaces, alter the flow of traffic, so design accordingly.

• Work within your overall landscape design. For instance, if you’ve chosen a Mediterranean landscape design or modern landscape design, two very distinctive residential garden styles, you will want the outdoor fire element to be of the same design and of like material.

• Determine the direction of the prevailing wind when deciding where to set this large permanent structure. If needed, you might be able to use the height of a tall fireplace to help screen the winds.

• Integrate with other hardscapes. Outdoor fireplaces play off nicely against luxury swimming pools; each increases the dramatic effect of the other. Also landscape lighting can ratchet up the “wow” factor of your outdoor fire element.

Jeff Halper, landscape design specialist at Exterior Worlds, says, “Outdoor fireplaces and fire pits are all about ambiance. For example, right now we’re working on a dining area that is situated in front of an outdoor fireplace. We’re in the process of training a tree limb to grow over the dining table. When it gets big enough, we’re going to wire a chandelier to hang from it.”

Outdoor Fireplaces: Don’t Zone Out

While they vary from city to city, most zoning regulations restrict how closely you can construct an outdoor fireplace to all existing buildings. Most regulate side and rear property line setbacks as well. You will also want to check to see if there are rules regarding slope setbacks and height restrictions. A landscape architect or landscape designer will help you navigate through the zoning issues and will design an outdoor fireplace or fire pit especially fitted for your residential property.

Outdoor Fireplaces: Safety First

Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces enhance any landscape design-but only if they are used properly and safely. Safety tips include:

• Always have fire extinguishers on hand.

• Keep all outdoor furniture safely away from any fire source.

• Fire screens are important accessories for outdoor fireplaces. They keep logs from rolling out of the fire and limit air-borne soot and cinders from flying about.

• If using a fire pit, follow the manufacturer’s directions and obey all city regulations.

• For wood-burning fireplaces, it is a good idea to schedule regular professional chimney cleaning. One rule of thumb is to base the maintenance on the amount of wood you burn. Assuming you have no problem with birds’ nest and other debris, you should get your chimney cleaned after burning two cords of wood-however long that takes.

• The #1 safety rule? Use your common sense.

Outdoor Fireplaces: A Lovely Garden Element

”Outdoor fireplaces, wherever they are-as a stand-alone, part of a outdoor kitchen or in a gazebo-are beautiful architectural elements,” says Halper. “And they quickly become the central place where everyone gathers. Everyone wants to have one, especially in winter in this part of the country. They are a luxury that is perfect for the Houston climate.”

Think of These Before You Buy an Outdoor Heater!

Outdoor heaters is the best item to have in order to create a warmer outdoor environment. This is especially useful for countries that experience colder weather. Buying one is not as simple as it seems because there is always a possibility of the heater giving problems as well as creates nasty accidents at home. Therefore, the heater should be scrutinized thoroughly so that chances of accidents are minimized as well as the heater will function properly as well as safely.

The outdoor gas heaters can cause serious harm when it is not used properly or functioning properly. The outdoor gas heaters are usually equipped with safety measures to safeguard during emergency. These safety switches are located somewhere around the heater and for outdoor gas heaters it is usually near the tank. One should also refer to the instruction booklet of these heaters for safety measures as well as tips.

The weight of the outdoor heaters should also be checked. Buyers often put these heaters in areas which are full of people. Thus, these items should not fall even if vibrations often rock the area. This is especially important with outdoor gas heaters since they have the tendency to spill if they are knocked over. The buyer should make sure that the heaters are placed in locations where they can be fully supported. Some buyers get lightweight heaters so that they can be placed safely in any location. There are also people that install the heaters within the wall, thus putting it firmly in place.

When you buy an outdoor heater, you would expect it to adhere to your need of warming an area comfortably. This heating ability can be controlled by the power setting. This is the most important criteria for outdoor heaters because there is absolutely no point in buying something that does not do the job properly. You can control this power and every manufacturer will have different power settings for their models. The power for outdoor gas heaters can be controlled by controlling the inflow of the gas.

Outdoor heaters may break down if they are used constantly. However, there are problems that can be fixed easily. Buyers must know some troubleshooting tricks whenever the heaters fail. The heaters break down due to a dirty surface most of the time. Thus, cleaning is important to ensure that the heaters are always in working condition. Outdoor gas heaters may also fail if there are no heating liquid left in the tank. It is up to the user to constantly check the amount remaining in the tank so that the heaters continue to generate power. These simple tips will help users in prolonging the life of the heaters.

Having outdoor heaters also means that you should do regular maintenance on the heater so that it will not break down. This is considered as important as troubleshooting. Regular maintenance on the heater will ensure a longer life span and avoid dangerous accidents. The outdoor gas heater needs to be checked regularly on the gas tank so that leaks can be detected before causing any hazard.

Outdoor heaters will require lots of attention and care. The criteria listed are among those that should be paid close attention to if you want your heater to work properly and safely. It will also ensure that the heater lasts longer. Outdoor gas heater will require more attention because of the man components.
